“Give Impeachment A Chance”

Apologies to John and Yoko, but I couldn’t help by try to get a chant of “Give Impeachment A Chance” at tonights #ImpeachmentEve rally in New York City. I just wasn’t able to get any traction with it. Don’t get me wrong, there waere no shortage of catchy slogans. They were all even conveniently printed on flyers and handed out by the rally organizers. But everyone of them sounded like they could have been a Ramones songs. A big one with the crowd was;

2–4–6–8
Impeach Trump and don’t you wait!

And;

Hey Hey, Ho Ho
Donald Trump has got to go!

Or this one, which seemed to confuse just about everyone;

I say people, you say power!
People! Power! People! Power

I think it was all of those “P’s’…there were too many (six out of the ten words!) We all kept on stumbling on the second line. It was more of an illiterat-ation than an alliteration (which is perhaps fitting since we were talking about Trump).

My failure with “Give Impeachment A Chance” was really suprising to me given the make up of the people at the rally. It was a great crowd that seemed to be made up of the most eager classmate you went to grade school with. EVERYONE was quick to follow directions, repeating chants until they each faded of their own volition.They were all so obedient that they dutifully repeated, out loud (this is not a joke), the organizer’s lengthy instructions to us before we all marched from Times Square to Union Square. This oranizer was just giving us all useful information, it was clearly NOT meant as a rallying cry. But after an hour of dutifuly repeating whatever the loudest voice was saying, everyone just felt compelled to continue repeating whatever they were hearing. So all ten thousand people chanted, in unison, instructions like;

“OK, WE ALL NEED TO WALK ON THE SIDEWALKS” and “BEFORE WE LEAVE, WE HAVE TO FOLD THE LARGE BANNER BECAUSE IT’S TOO BIG”

So with this in mind, I felt that I could get a decent chant of ;

All we are saying
Give impeachment a chance

I mean, this should have been the easiest thing in the world. They had just repeated traffic instructions! And it’s such an easy melody to sing. There were a couple of titters when I first sang it. I think people thought I was joking because of the play on words. But I thought I could hear a groundswell of voices behind me picking up the chant. So I gave a rousing “I CAN’T HEAR YOU” before giving it another go and instead of rising to the challenge, they all just validated that I couldn’t hear them because they were not saying anything. I somehow managed to silence the crowd at a Trump rally! So I covered my embarrassment with a feeble;

Nah Nah Nah Nah, Nah Nah Nah Nah
Hey, Hey Hey, Goodbye

This got a better response but by the time we got to Times Square, we were all back to;

Hey Hey, Ho Ho
Donald Trump has got to go!

So on this historic day (and not being one to let a good pun go to waste), I give you the full length version of “Give Impeachment A Chance”.
